Video Poker

Developed in the mid-1970s, when arcade screens and personal computers were becoming a reality, video poker is exactly as it sounds—a computerized version of the game, based on traditional five-card draw. Some feel the video machines present them with better odds; others just like the console interface.

Whatever the reason for playing though, video poker has enjoyed increasing success since its inception, and become a staple of many physical casinos and online platforms. The rules aren't exactly the same as playing poker at a table against other players, but most machines do operate on a similar set of shared basic principles.

At the most simple level, video poker machines play as such:

You start with five cards.
You can choose to hold or discard any number of cards from your starting hand.
Cards you choose to discard will be replaced at random.
Your final hand will be judged by standard poker table hands. The better your hand, the more you win.
It's a simple concept, part of the reason so many people enjoy playing video poker. What's more, video poker is said to offer better odds if the employ clever strategy. Online video poker works much the same as it would in-casino, but the real fun (for some) comes in trying out the many variations of the basic video-poker setup that online platforms offer:

Jacks Or Better: This is one of the most common types of video poker you'll find. Play is the same, but to get paid, you'll need at least a pair of jacks (or better). Any lesser hand will result in a loss. Since jacks result in small but reasonable payouts, though, you can concentrate on playing conservatively to maximize your gains.
Deuces Wild: As the name suggests, deuces in this variation are wild cards. That means you can substitute them for any rank or suit. Payouts are reduced as a result, but it's easier to put together big hands with this style of video poker.
Double Bonus: This style is similar to Jacks Or Better, but you also get a big bonus if you manage to net four aces. It can be a bit trickier for newer players, but experienced video pokers can manage to get some good returns if they play their cards right.
There are many other options that you'll see while browsing different online casinos, so be sure to read up on each before you play. Video poker might be a slightly different from traditional poker, but it's no less exciting and offers a large amount of variety that many players greatly appreciate.
